Hello Im Aruna, Im an illustration student from London, I chose illustration to push for change in how we create art. There is a massive issue within the creative arts of only portraying western beauty, white models or the wealthy few in society. However growing up I wasnt rich, white or someone who fit western beauty standards. Im half Irish and half Iranian, i grew up working class and Im non-binary. I purposefully make illustrations depicting more than white, cis, middle class characters. I didn't see myself represented at all as a child so I'm hoping to represent all people of colour, from all races and ethnicities, from different abilities, fashion styles and heights even. Im aiming to work as a children's book illustrator and hopefully one day and author as well. I think my upbringing in a multi-cultural area and house sets me apart from a lot of people, I didn't only hang out with people who looked like me or thought like me, and my art is an extension of that. |
